Premature Rescue |

I had lunch with a friend today and we had an interesting conversation. We talked about our kids and the concept of ‘premature rescue’—you know, saving our kids before they have a chance to save themselves. He told me how one of his kids ‘remembered’ on Sunday night about a school project due the next morning. His wife ran to Target, got some poster board, and sat around the kitchen table till late that night helping get the project done, all the while lecturing their child on promptness and responsibility. Should they have let their daughter fail; get a bad grade, with the hope she would learn a more valuable lesson of life? I don’t think God is quite as over-eager a parent as we are. I think he says, “You know, I could run to Target for you tonight and get some poster board, but that wouldn’t really help you in the long run. As much as it hurts you, and me, I think I’ll just let you fail because this might prevent a bigger failure down the road.” I think God parents us a little better, with the big picture in mind. |
