Not all surprises during my 30-day experiment were what I would call good surprises. Some weren’t much fun at all. It’s during these dark times that we assume God is silent, that he’s not communicating with us. Well, what if it’s just the opposite of that? What if these dark times are when he is yelling the loudest? Don’t we seem to learn more and grow more from the hard situations we go through? And when we’ve come through them aren’t we grateful for the growth that it produced? Maybe God’s a painter and one of his favorite colors is midnight blue. If he only used reds and yellows all the time, we’d probably never grow. We’d have monochromatic character. We’d look one-dimensional. God has a big palette. He has lots of colors and he knows how to use them. We need to trust the Painter with his colors. He’ll make something of our canvas. He always has, he always will. Listen during the dark times—especially during the dark times. He may be yelling.
