SURPRISE ME
Surprise du Jour
Title:
  Speed Junkies
Read:
My dad is 86. He times himself when he mows the lawn to see how fast he can do it. I like to test the cornering ability of my Yardman. My dad races his car engine. I race bicycles. We’re a couple of speed junkies. So what does that tell you? Well, I suppose it says that the muffler doesn’t fall far from the chassis. But other than that, I guess it says that I am genetically predisposed to be in a hurry. I love speed. I love when things blur. I love adrenaline. But life isn’t processed well on adrenaline. Speed isn’t conducive to noticing the nuances of life. Oh, God can handle fast, but I think he intends for us to observe the moment we’re in. He wants us to see and comprehend the present, because that’s where we live and that’s where we meet him. When I wake up in the morning and pray, “Surprise Me, God” and then proceed to barrel through the day at 10,000rpms, there’s a good chance I’ll miss what he prepared for me today. Throttle back a touch. He might have an interesting detour for you that you might miss at warp speed.
