The Ride |

I went for a bike ride today. Well, more than a ride, I’m actually training for the Minnesota State Championship bicycle race. So I head out with the intention of going fast and hard. I’m a half-mile into my training ride when I pull up behind a guy, another cyclist, who’s not exactly flying. I figured I’d just blow by him, but as I’m about to pass him I got that nudge that said, “What if he’s part of your Surprise Me experiment?” So I told God, “Okay, I’ll give him 15 feet to surprise me.” He surprised me alright. He’d just gotten back from climbing Mt. McKinley where his buddy was killed in a rockslide. He told me how his friend had stepped in front of him in line at the last minute. A fatal move for his friend, but life for him. He said, “That should have been me. I’m supposed to be dead. Why am I still here?” We talked about life, and faith, and God. We rode for 15 miles. I thought I’d be with him for 15 feet, max. I guess God wanted me to train for a different race today. Thanks for surprising me, God. |
